Thematically, the fantastical art of Wolfgang Schulze (known as Wols) creates a miniature world bridging Surrealismus, Art Informel and Tachism (these last tow are known in America as Abstract Expressionism), which dominated European art in the 1950s. This volume rediscovers the wide spectrum of this very versatile artist's work and its significance for late 20h century painting.

This is the first publication to focus on Schiele’s early works, and it includes both in-depth analysis and reproductions of hitherto unpublished works. During his first creative phase, Schiele developed several basic formal principles, among them his distinctive brushstroke, his intensity and the expressive line that characterises his work.

The early work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928–2000) had a marked impact on the international art scene of the post-war avantgarde. This publication, produced on the occasion of the Hundertwasser exhibition at the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna, demonstrates the influence of Japanese art and philosophy on the work of Hundertwasser in the 1950s and early 1960s.
