Andreas Horlitz
Reconnaissance, 1987, 2011
Andreas Horlitz is best known for his large-scale installations of mirror and glass. The variety of his work, ranging from photographs, to scientifically sourced material, is represented in this 30-year retrospective of his work.
description
Although he started out as a photographer, Horlitz was quick to break away from purely mimetic representation. Cross-fading images and text layers, and using transparency to create photos with double meanings, he also experimented with lightboxes. Today, they constitute a key element of his work. His works range from small and medium-sized objects to large in situ installations and architectural projects. His artworks are often based on scientifically sourced material and are the result of his creative exchanges with scientists. Horlitz’s series, Autoportraits, began with a sample of his own DNA; today it includes eight biometric portraits. This year, the artist’s most recent and largest installation project, Interdependence, was inaugurated in The Hague. The partly mirrored, 250-metre-long glass fence symbolises information streams, velocities, waves and multiple horizons. Equilibrium describes a state of suspension, a balance which is achieved by uniting differing forces. Horlitz is equally interested in references to both historical and contemporary visual cultures which can be found in texts and symbols.
