Kennedy in Berlin
Published to mark the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s historic visit to Berlin in June 1963, Kennedy in Berlin captures the event in a series of hitherto unpublished photographs by Ulrich Mack. Technically superb, Mack’s photographs feature both the great set pieces of the visit, and candid, unscripted and personal moments in stunning close-up.
description
John F. Kennedy’s words, »Ich bin ein Berliner« made history. Addressing a crowd of several hundred thousand in West Berlin, two years after the erection of the Berlin Wall, the young and charismatic president conveyed solidarity and support for West Germany in a decisive moment in Cold War history.
Ulrich Mack’s unseen photographs feature Kennedy’s triumphal ticker-tape procession down the main street of West Berlin with West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and Willy Brandt, mayor of Berlin; his visit to the notorious Checkpoint Charlie where Kennedy stands atop the observation deck; and the crowd of cheering West Berliners encircling the president following his impassioned speech.
Ulrich Mack, now an award-winning photographer and a former Professor of Visual Arts at Dortmund University, has chosen over 100 of his photos of this historic visit.
