Networks of Construction
Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov (1853-1939) is known for inventions and engineering challenges that were ahead of his time such as the construction of the first Russian oil-pipeline and the invention of oil-cracking. Shukhovs pioneering structural works, such as hanging roofs and hyperbolic lattice towers, relate to the most cited examples of advanced engineering design from the turn of the 20th century.
description
The book expands a discourse on constructions with a wide range of themes, such as technology transfer, control and standardization in metal industry, engineering education and scientification of construction knowledge. It explores the interconnectedness of all factors, which have influenced the construction of Shukhovs structures, from the nomenclature of steel grades to the technical background of construction workers. Behind each of novel Shukhovs designs is a unique and elaborated project, distinguished by a high level of prefabrication and a need for a detailed project of realization. These inherent parts of the design are carefully reconstructed on the basis of archival drawings, photographs and various written documents.
