The deliberate staging of beautiful make-believe and breathtaking acrobatics has long been a source of great fascination. At the same time, this world of illusions is fraught with social controversy and criticism, which international artists and leading experts address.

For a long time, an awareness of ethical attitudes toward humans and animals simply did not exist in the world of circus. Discrimination, stigmatization, and oppression were the order of the day, as was demonstrated by putting so-called “freaks of nature” on display for commercial gain. In essays by leading experts and works by international artists, this volume takes a critical look at the circus phenomenon and challenges present-day structures in society through investigations rooted in art, cultural history, animal ethics, and anti-racism.
