Oskar von Miller Forum
Building for the Future
After many years of planning, a visionary and attention-grabbing building has taken shape in Munich in the form of the Oskar von Miller Forum. The centre was designed by the well-known architectural office Herzog + Partner for international encounters between students of the architectural departments at Munich’s Technical University. An important aspect of the building is sustainability.
description
In recent decades, building in Germany has undergone fundamental and in some cases highly dynamic changes. Steadily increasing complexity in construction, awareness of environmental impact, and the development of new materials and techniques are making sustainable building a crucial condition for engineering activity. The design of the Oskar von Miller Forum takes advantage of this evolution and its façade makes this sustainability very public. But the photovoltaic modules on the southern side of the U-shaped building and the solar-thermal collectors on the roof are only the most visible elements of the environmentally friendly and emission-reducing measures. At the same time, great importance was attached to the comfort of the building’s residents. The design of the rooms is determined by clear lines, emphasized by modern furnishings, which consist of design classics, and the art installations in the corridors.
This volume gives a detailed presentation of a building which provides accommodation for high caliber students and visiting staff in the architectural field, as well as being a centre for international exchange of knowledge. The text and pictures accompany the plan from the first designs to completion, and reflect the challenges of this demanding project.
