Texts & Interviews
Stephan von Huene is known primarily for his sound sculptures, which he started making in the late 1960s. In 2010, von Huene reinvented himself as a graphic artist and introduced this work in an extensive exhibition. He simultaneously also developed his own style as an author, joining images and words in an argument of astounding unity.
description
Stephan von Huene (1932 – 2000), an American artist with German roots, was once referred to as someone who crosses and shifts borders. He was not part of a group, nor was he interested in following a particular trend. In addition to studying art and art history, he was interested in technical literature on sound, music, instruments and musical machines. He started building his first sound sculptures in the 1960s. Two extensive interviews provide insights into these processes and their ensuing complications. The graphic artist von Huene playfully transformed lecture and seminar texts, thoughts on media art, and representations of the genesis of his own works into concentrated mind maps. In these contemplative mappings, words and images, texts and drawings are both contrasted and combined.
