Gunther Gerlach
Sculpture and Space
Gunther Gerlach, born in 1952, has forged a completely new direction in the long tradition of wood sculpture. This publication provides insight into a period of artistic creativity spanning 35 years and characterised by his total dedication to this living material.
description
Gunther Gerlach’s works are expansive, abstract, but also entirely committed to form. He is fascinated by process and has the courage to experiment. Gerlach works towards a truly three-dimensional form where his works have aspects of equal interest no matter from which perspective they are viewed. Many are slender columnar figures of varying height that can evoke human form. Several are painted and thus the white objects appear to be of stone, and the blue hint that they are made of metal. The meaning of the individual items is retained in his installations as a part of the experience, their position relative to each other and the space between them extending an invitation to move among them.
