A Dialogue Between Contemporary Art from South Africa & the Daimler Art Collection
In the year of the soccer World Cup in South Africa, the country’s cultural development is the focus of attention with an exhibition of international contemporary South African art in Berlin. The presentation of some 50 works embraces photography and video art alongside installations, sculptures and concept art.
description
With the presentation of the Mercedes-Benz Award for South African Art and Culture, which is highly regarded not only in South Africa but internationally, the Daimler Art Collection has committed itself for more than ten years to the cause of South African artists, musicians, architects, authors and fashion designers. The winners in the various categories have been represented all over the world in galleries and projects, at biennials and the Documenta exhibitions, and are included among prominent exponents of contemporary art and culture. In a presentation conceived as a dialogue, up-to-the-minute performative, conceptual, and abstract tendencies of contemporary South African art are confronted by selected works from the Daimler Art Collection.
The internationally oriented Daimler Art Collection concentrates on abstract avantgarde works and reductionist trends from the Bauhaus up to the present day. The present volume shows important works of international contemporary art, including works by forerunners such as Robert Filliou, Jan Henderikse, Sue Williamson, and Willem Boshoff, along with representatives of the younger generation such as Mikhael Subotzky, Nicholas Hlobo, Robin Rhode, Alicja Kwade, Monika Sosnowska, and Natalia Stachon.
